“Why do I sense the presence of "water" in Lori's oil paintings?”

今回紹介するアーティスト、ロリ・コプロウスキーによる油彩画は、油絵の具で描かれているにもかかわらず、画面から受ける印象は“オイリー”というより“ウォータリー”。

The oil paintings by Lori Koprowski, the artist featured in this article, are painted with oil paints, but the impression one gets from the paintings is more “watery” rather than “oily”.

彼女がしばしば作品に描く、チョウや花、裸婦などは、キャンバスの上に固定されているように見えず、まるで水の中を、あるいは水の表面を自由気ままにたゆたっているかのように感じられます。

The butterflies, flowers, and naked women she often paints do not appear to be fixed on the canvas, but seem to me as if they are freely moving through the water or on its surface.

油彩画に対し、このような感想を抱いたのは私にとって初めての体験で、それがこのアーティストに強い興味をいだくきっかけになりました。

This was the first time I had ever felt this way about oil paintings, and it sparked my strong interest in this artist.

Then I I wanted to hear more about the artist herself, her creative process, and the background of her works.

I was fortunate that my wish was heard by her this time. I am very to be able to share with you the content of the dialogue I had with Lori.

アロハ・セイルズ ハワイ（以下、アロハ）：ハワイ州は、アメリカ本土も含め、世界中のさまざまなエリアから移り住んできた人々が集まり暮らしている地域だよね。

同様のバックグランドを持っているアーティストも珍しくなくて、彼らはハワイのアートシーンに魅力的かつ豊かなバリエーションをもたらしていると思う。

そこでまずは、あなたがアメリカ本土からマウイ島に移り住んだ時の話から聞かせてもらえるかな？

Aloha Sails Hawaii (“Aloha”) : The state of Hawaii is a region where people from different areas of the world, including the mainland U.S., have moved to live together.

It is not uncommon to find artists with immigrant backgrounds, and I think they bring a fascinating and rich variety to the Hawaiian art scene.

So, can you start by telling me about your own story of moving to Maui from the U.S. mainland?

ロリ・コプロウスキー（以下、ロリ）：私が初めてマウイ島を訪れたのは、アメリカ南部・ルイジアナ州立大学の芸術デザイン学部で学んでいた学生の時だったわ。ボーイフレンドだった今の夫が、少し長めの夏休みを取ってマウイでウィンドサーフィンをしよう、と提案してくれたの。

その時の体験は私にアーティスティックなインスピレーションを与えてくれただけじゃなく、私の考え方を変え、この島でぜひ暮らしたいと私自身に強く思わせるものだった。

そして、大学卒業後にマウイに戻ったんだけど、その後の数年間は定住はしないで、マウイ、オーストラリア、フィジー、ロサンゼルスを頻繁に行き来しながら、まるで年中旅をしているように過ごしていたわ。

そういった日々もやがて数年で終わり、今は、マウイ島のノースショアにある田舎町マカワオで、夫と二人の娘と一緒に暮らしている。マウイは私の“魂”そのもの。ここにいると心の底からリラックスできるし、毎日、ハッピーに過ごせるのよ。

Lori Koprowski (“Lori”) : I first came to Maui to windsurf during college. I was in the School of Art & Design at Louisiana State University (LSU), when my then boyfriend now husband had suggested taking off a summer and semester to windsurf on Maui.

I had a year left until graduating and was able to get special permission from the school of Art and Design to come to Maui for windsurfing and inspiration and bring back a portfolio of my experience and graduate with the class behind me and that’s exactly what I did and have my BFA from LSU.

The ocean and island experience changed my outlook and I focused on trying to figure out how to make Maui home. I returned to Maui after college but soon travel opportunities and surf and exhibiting in Australia, living in Fiji and back and forth to Los Angeles became routine, but years later Maui did become home and I’ve been here ever since.

I live on the North Shore of Maui in the upcountry area of Makawao with my husband Carter and daughters Lola and Olivia. I have to say Maui is my soul. I truly feel grounded here and enjoy being here daily.

アロハ：マカワオといえば、マウイ島で最も高いハレアカラ山の山麓にある、自然豊かなエリアだよね。ハワイのカーボーイたち―「パニオロ」の町としても知られ、アーティストの人々も多く暮らしている。マウイ島、そしてマカワオでの生活はあなたの創作活動にどのようなメリットをもたらしているのかな？

Aloha : Makawao is a rich natural area at the foot of “Haleakala Mountain,” the highest mountain on Maui. It is also known as the town of Hawaiian cowboys - “paniolo” - and is home to many artists. How does living on Maui and in Makawao benefit your creative work?

ロリ：海やビーチ、夕暮れ時の海水浴やサーフィン、カイトサーファーたちが集うビーチや大空に舞うカラフルな凧、ダンスやヨガ。そして、雲、山並み、自宅の庭に咲いている花々や町を歩いている時に出会う花々、それらの花々に集うチョウたち、島に暮らす人々まで、ここにあるもの全てが私のクリエイティビティと作品にインスピレーションを与えてくれているわ。

私は作品に、自分がどう感じるか、私自身の体験や行為、物事の見え方、つまりを“私自身”を描いている。そして、それらは、まさに“いまのハワイ”を表現したものでもあるの。

Lori : Everything here inspires my creativity and painting. The female form is my inspiration…. From ocean and sunset swims and surf to kite beach and the colorful kites in the sky to dance and yoga, the clouds and mountain ranges and the flowers growing in my yard or passing by and of course butterflies seen and in my mind…femme+++.

I paint how I feel, what I do, how I see. I feel my artwork is contemporary Hawaii and Maui is my soul.

アロハ：なるほど、たとえば、あなたの作品のどのような部分に“いまのハワイ”は現れているんだろうか？

Aloha : I see. What part of your work, for example, expresses the “Hawaii of today”?

ロリ：そうね。たとえば私がこれまで描いてきた作品の中に、“xo butterfly”と題されたシリーズがあるんだけれど、そこに描かれた女性の形と長く流れるような髪はハワイのあちこちに流れ落ちている滝を表し、重なり合うような女性たちの姿は、私自身が目にする熱帯の風景や山脈、雲の形からインスパイアされたものよ。

Lori : Among the many works I have painted is a series titled “xo butterfly. In this series, femme figures and their long flowing hair represent waterfalls and also, my layering of my femme figures are inspired by the tropical landscapes and mountain ranges and cloud formations I see.

画面をいろどる色彩はハワイの暖かさそのものであり、ハワイの花々や風景、太陽や海のトロピカルカラーよ。そして、ハワイの自然の中でもとりわけ海は、すべての作品を通して、私の大きなインスピレーションの源になっているわ。

そんな“xo butterfly”シリーズは、私自身が抱いているハワイの島々への愛情、そしてそれらの島々が提供してくれるものに対する私自身の愛情を反映したものともいえるわね。

Lori : And the colors are the warmth of the island The tropical colors of the flowers and scenery, and of course the sun and sea. Especially, the ocean is a main inspiration throughout my oil paintings.

My “xo butterfly” series could be interpreted as my love of the islands and their offerings reflected.

絵画、特に油彩画を、幼い頃からよく描いていたというロリ。彼女がしばしば描く、絡み合い、レイヤー状に重なり合い、一種、誇張をされた女性たちの像を表現するのにも油絵の具が適しているのだそうです。

Lori has been painting, especially oil paintings, since she was a child. She says that oil paintings and oil paints are suitable for expressing the layered and exaggerated images of women that she often paints.

油彩画は制作にとても手間がかかるものの、それもまた魅力であり、バターのような油絵の具の感触やその時の気分に合わせて自由に選べる豊かな顔料も大好きなのだと彼女は話してくれました。

She told me that while oil painting is very labor intensive, it is also very appealing, and she loves the buttery feel of oil paint and the rich pigments that allow her to create any color combination she wishes to create.

そこで次に私は、彼女の作品をいろどる「色彩」について質問をしてみることにしました。

I then asked her about the “colors” in her works.

アロハ：ウェブサイトのプロフィール文に「彼女の美的感覚では『色彩』がとても大きな役割を果たしている」と書かれているけれど、これはどういうことか教えてもらえるかな？

Aloha : According to your profile statement on your website, “In her aesthetic sense, “colors” plays a central role.” Can you tell me what this means?

ロリ：私は太陽と海の色のコントラストが大好きなの。太陽の光のようなオレンジ、海のブルーやミント色がかったエメラルドグリーンは特にお気に入りの色彩よ。とはいっても、私は限られた色だけを使うのではなく、様々な色を混ぜ合わせて描くのが好き。それらは南国の、とてもハッピーな色彩ね。それ以外に、白と黒のモノクロで描くことも楽しんでいるわ。

Lori : I love the contrasting colors of the sun and sea. Sunshine shades of orange and the various shades of ocean blues and minty emerald greens are a favorite color palette of mine. But I enjoy painting in a variety of color playing of each other…the colors of the tropics and very happy. I also enjoy painting in black and white.

アロハ：あなたが作品に使うさまざまな色彩の中で、私が特に印象的に感じるのが爽やかで涼しげなブルーなんだ。このブルーにまつわるエピソードがあれば教えてほしいな。

Aloha : Of the various colors you use in your work, one that I find particularly striking is the fresh, cool blue. I would love to know if you have any artistic episodes related to this blue.

ロリ：ありがとう。私にとってもこの穏やかで心安らぐようなブルーは特別な色で、ハワイの海や空、特に、私が泳いだりサーフィンしたりする海にインスパイアされた、穏やかで、心が落ち着くような色彩なの。そんな海にはできるだけ毎日入るようにしているわ。

そして、ブルーといえば、私の“aloha butterfly”シリーズね。このシリーズでは、さまざまな種類のブルーとグリーンを混ぜ合わせて層状にした“海の青”で抽象的な姿のチョウを描き、それらのチョウと女性がブルーとグリーンのモノクロームな雰囲気の中で絡み合いながら、美しい色彩の広がりを生み出すように描いているのよ。

Lori : Thank you and the blues are special as all are inspired by the ocean here, and the sky, but mainly from ocean swims and surf…very calming and serene. I try to be in the ocean daily.

I paint my “aloha butterfly” series with my ocean blue butterflies which are a variety of different blue and green oil paints mixed and layered to create a beautiful color range of my abstract butterflies and my femme figures intertwined throughout this monochromatic sea green and ocean blue feeling.

アロハ：そういえば、女性のからだとともに、あなたの作品に頻繁に登場するモチーフがチョウだよね。チョウをあなたが初めて描いたのはいつのことだったの？

Aloha : Come to think of it, along with the female body, a motif that appears frequently in your work is the butterfly. When was the first time you painted these butterflies?

ロリ：チョウ自体は子供の頃からずっと描いているの。アーティストとしての活動を始めて以降だと、オーストラリア時代には、具象画と並行して制作していた抽象的な野の花の畑に舞い飛ぶチョウの姿を描いていたように思うわ。

そして妊娠中に“beautiful chaos”シリーズでチョウを描き、その後、さきほど話した“xo butterfly”や“aloha butterfly”のシリーズでは、チョウと女性を組み合わせて描くようになったの。

そこで描いたチョウの中には実在する本物のチョウにインスパイアされたものもあるけれど、気分の流れに任せて自由に描いたチョウが多いわね。そして、これらのチョウは一匹一匹が独立した抽象画のようであり、とても女性的で、重層的で、質感も豊かなの。

Lori : I’ve been painting butterflies since I was a kid. But I think I was painting butterflies in fields of abstract wildflowers along with my figurative paintings in Australia.

And then more “beautiful chaos” butterflies when I was pregnant and then my “xo butterfly” and “aloha butterfly” series paintings with my femme figures intertwined throughout where I feel the paint.

These series have become a continuous and repetitious theme yet very spontaneous as each individual butterfly is as its own abstract painting and very feminine, layered and very textural…. Some are inspired by actual butterflies but when I’m painting I just let the mood flow….

アロハ：チョウを描いた作品のタイトルにしばしば、アルファベットのXやOを用いるのはなぜ？　

そして、画面にチョウの形状とともに円を描く理由は何なのかな？

Aloha : Why do you often use the letters X and O in the titles of your works depicting butterflies? And why do you draw a circle on the screen along with the shape of the butterfly?

ロリ：一つ目の質問は私の“xo butterfly”シリーズのことよね？ まず、Xは私の描く抽象的なチョウを表していて、Oは継続的な無限を表している。そして、（アメリカではとても一般的な表現だけれど）XやOはそれぞれキスとハグを意味するから、XOはハッピーな挨拶と愛情のシンボルでもある。

そして二つ目の質問への答えだけど、円は太陽と月、ハワイではとても人気のあるヨガで使われる専用のボール（ロリの自宅やアトリエの至るところに置かれているという、ビニール製のバランスボールのこと）、そして（Oと同様に）継続と無限をシンボリックに表現したものよ。

Lori : I have my “xo butterfly” series where the “X” are represented by my abstract butterflies and the “O” represent ongoing infinity  and symbolizing “X”s and “O”s as in hugs and kisses “xo” happy greetings and affection….

The circles in my paintings are representational of the sun and moon, yoga balls which I have throughout my home and studio and “ongoing” and “infinity”….

アロハ：どうも、ありがとう。今日は率直な質問を沢山させてもらったけど、とても丁寧に、具体的に答えてもらえたおかげで、あなたの作品への理解が深まったと感じているよ。

Aloha : Thank you very much. I had a lot of candid questions today, and I feel that I have a better understanding of your work because of your very specific and detailed answers.

ロリ：こちらこそ、どうもありがとう。私の作品は、マウイ南部のワイレアにある「ワイレア・コンテンポラリー・ギャラリー」、同じマウイのノースショア、パイアにある「アートプロジェクト・コンテンポラリー・ギャラリー」のほか、マウイ島とハワイ島それぞれの「フォーシーズンズ・ホテル」、美しいブティックホテル「ホテル・ワイレア」内の常設展示でも観てもらえるわ。

マウイのフォーシーズンズで毎週火曜日に開催されているアートイベント「アーティスト・ショーケース」にも作品を出していて、この催しは、私自身が来場いただいた皆さんと直接お話しできる機会になっているの。

これからも制作活動は積極的に続けていくので、もし機会があれば、私の作品のもとを訪れてもらえたら嬉しいわ。

Lori : Thank you very much, too. My artwork is also showcased at both Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea and Four Seasons Resort Hualalai in Big Island. My femme figurative oil paintings are featured throughout the beautiful boutique hotel - Hotel Wailea and you can also see my paintings both at Wailea Contemporary Gallery in Wailea, Maui and Art Project Contemporary Gallery in Paia, Maui. I also exhibit with the Four Seasons Artists Showcase every Tuesday and occasional evenings where I get to talk and meet visitors directly.

最後に、話を再び、冒頭に戻しましょう。なぜ私がロリの作品の画面を“ウォータリー”だと感じたのかについてです。

彼女はウォータースポーツである「ウィンドサーフィン」を通じて四方を豊かな海に囲まれた地‐ハワイと出合いました。

そんなロリが描くのは、彼女の日常の暮らしでの実体験としてのハワイであり、その生活は常に海とともにあります。

言い換えれば、彼女が心から愛し、魂が安らぐ場所と語るハワイは、海なくしてはありません。だからこそ、彼女が描き出すハワイには海（≒水）の存在が強く感じられるのではないでしょうか。

ですから、作品の画面をスイマーのように自在に漂い、舞い踊るかような女性、そしてチョウはロリ自身の姿を表すものなのかもしれません。

彼女の油彩画には、そんな想像を自由に楽しませてくれる面白さもあるのです。

Finally, let's return to the topic at the beginning of this article. I mean that I would like to think again why I found Lori's oil paintings“watery”.

Through the water sport of windsurfing, she discovered Hawaii, a land surrounded by bountiful oceans on all sides.

Lori paints Hawaii as her own experience in her daily life, and her life is always with the ocean in Hawaii. In other words, Hawaii, which she loves dearly and where her soul finds deep peace, would not exist without the ocean. That is why I feel the presence of the ocean (≒water) in Hawaii she depicts.

Therefore, the figure of the woman and butterflies that floats and dances freely across the canvas like swimmers could possibly represent Lori herself.

One of the interesting things about her oil paintings is that they allow us to indulge in such an imagination.
